THE CULTURAL CLUB

ABOUT US

The Sports Club

We organise events and practices to play soccer and other sports for enjoyment and for competition within our own ethnic communitiy and in the wider local community. We also play in tournaments and community events in Auckland and around New Zealand. All members gather at least twice a year for a social club event, and these usually comprise of prize-giving ceremonies, guest speakers and an official celebration.

The Cultural Club

The cultural club enjoy learning and performing Ethopian songs and dances. They are also interested in Ethiopian art, costumes and cooking and have fashion shows as well as workshops and displays.

School Holiday/Afterschool Programmes

Programmes are run for the fun and enjoyment of school aged children between 5 and 13 years of ages. Older children are welcome as volunteers. At these programmes we also tackle topics of social issues for children face as well as safety and plans for the future.

Playgroup

Twice a week a playgroup is held in Mt Albert for children under 5 and their parents or caregivers. This programme allows for interaction with others and is open for all participants of the community.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The Ethiopian Sport and Cutural Club of New Zealand is a not-for profit organisation which has been running since 2002 and is run mostly by volunteers. It is committed to providing immigrant Ethiopians/Africans and their families a space in which they can gain a sense of identity and belonging New Zealand and share it with others.

OUR GOALS

Our purpose is to provide activities and services to help the community and especially the youth understand their roots and their language. We also aim to reduce the many problems caused from migrating to NZ and for participants to retain their own culture and share it with their children and the community while stilll fitting into NZ society. Most of our members come from low income families and do not have much to contribute to our activities and need support in many different ways. We strive to support them in every way we are able. Our many activitives are organised in a way to get people connected with others both of their own cultural background and others in the community. We want our new-comers to fully fit into NZ's multicultural society and to enjoy their new life. We also want to create a better understanding between different cultural groups in the community.
